The Deep Wilds Story
Deep Wilds was founded in 1994 by
Ken Grudens, Mark Morey and Steve Young. In 1994 and 1995 they
led numerous backpacking programs in the Adirondacks and Catskills.
Program content ranged from an introduction to backpacking to
wilderness survival and nature awareness. Ken left in 1997 to
work on land conservation. Starting in 1995, they began to facilitate
wilderness skills programs for school groups. their children's
programming continued to grow until 1998 when they shifted their
focus to summer camp programs for
children and teens as well as customized programs for school
groups. In 1999 they moved their home base to Brattleboro,
VT where a supportive community has helped their summer camp
programs to thrive. In 1999, Mark and Steve cofounded the Vermont Wilderness
School along with Luz Elena Morey and Brian Robertshaw. Vermont
