Camp Facilities
Coyote Camp, Raccoon Camp
& School Programs
Since 2002, our overnight programs
have had a home at Riverbend Camp, an 800 acre property on the
banks of the Williams River in Rockingham Vermont (near Bellows
Falls and Springfield). A varied landscape of fields, thickets,
woods and a wetland support a diverse population of plants and
animals. A year-round mountain stream with an awesome waterfall
joins the river right near our camp. Our simple but comfortable
outdoor camp includes an outdoor kitchen with running spring
water, large tents and canvas covered wigwams, and a central
stone fire pit.
Wild edible plants as well as plant resources
for crafts abound on the property as do tracking opportunities.
We have seen deer, turkey, fishers and a bear as well as evidence
of coyotes and foxes.
Otter Day Camp
Otter Camp 2005 was held at Fort Dummer
State Park in Brattleboro. The location worked very well with
a lovely creek down the hill, lots of varied woods and a small
field. The 2006 Location is tentatively Fort Dummer State Park.
Stay tuned for details.
Health
and Safety
We keep a well stocked first aid kit on site
and there is always an instructor on site trained to the level
of Wilderness First Responder. Medical care is available at Brattleboro
Memorial Hospital, about a 15 minute drive away. Springfield
Hospital is a 15 minute drive from Coyote Camp. We emphasize
safety, particularly awareness around knives, saws and fire,
as well as good hygiene as ways of minimizing the need for medical
care. In 7 years and almost 2300 person-days of programming we
have had only one injury serious enough to require a couple of
stiches and have never had an illness that required a participant
to leave a program.
